Drone Policy for London and Midlands sites

The use of drones (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVs) is strictly prohibited on and around RAF Museum premises. This policy applies to all visitors, staff, and third parties to ensure the safety, security of people, and preservation of our historic site, aircraft, and exhibits.

Legal Restrictions

1. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Regulations

  • Under the Air Navigation Order 2016 (as amended), it is illegal to fly a drone within 50 metres of people, vehicles, buildings, or structures not under the control of the drone operator.
  • Thee use of drones in congested areas, such as public spaces like the RAF Museum, is restricted under Article 95 and 239 of the Air Navigation Order.
2. Security Concerns
  • The RAF Museum is home to historically significant, buildings, aircraft and sensitive materials. Unauthorized drone flights could pose a security risk. 
  • Drones may interfere with Museum operations and emergency response procedures.
3. Airspace Restrictions
  • The RAF Museum London is located near restricted or controlled airspace, where drone operations require special permissions from the CAA.
  • The RAF Museum, Midlands has restricted airspace under the control of RAF Cosford. The Military Aviation Authority is responsible for the regulation, assurance and enforcement of the defence air operating and technical domains.
  • Breaching these restrictions could result in legal action under UK airspace protection laws.
4. Privacy and Data Protection
  • Drone photography or videography may infringe on the privacy rights of visitors and staff under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018.
5. Public Safety and Liability
  • Unauthorized drone flights present a risk of injury, damage to exhibits, or interference with Museum events.
  • Any individual found operating a drone on Museum property may be asked to leave, and legal action may be pursued in cases of damage or disruption.
Enforcement

Visitors found in violation of this policy will be reported to Museum security and, if necessary, the appropriate authorities, including the CAA and local law enforcement.
