Chocks away for the Spitfire 360°
Published on: 11 October 2018
The RAF Museum is presenting, from 20 October, an exciting new virtual reality experience which gives visitors the thrill of flying in a Spitfire!
The Spitfire 360° is a brand-new experience developed by the RAF Museum which puts the visitor 10,000 feet in the air in one of the most iconic cockpits in history.
Once visitors put on the VR goggles they are in the cockpit and have a fully interactive 360° panoramic view around them. The 6-minute flight includes engine start, taxi, take off and a circuit of the airfield with low passes, swoops, banks and a loop-de-loop. The experience ends with a landing and taxi into the hangar.
The footage for the Spitfire 360° was created especially for the RAF Museum enables the visitor to have the feel of what it must have been like flying the Spitfire. Its all-around view provides an insight in how the pilot handles the controls during taking off or while throwing the Spitfire from a loop to a tight turn.
The Spitfire was the standard RAF fighter aircraft during the Second World War and beyond. Pilots were lyrical about its performance coupled with its gentle handling. Many pilots claimed the Spitfire fitted them like a glove. Not only were its controls very responsive, the cockpit was also as cramped as wearing a glove.
The experience will run daily from 11.00am – 5.00pm until the end of October and then 11.00am – 4.15pm from 1 November – 28 February. Tickets can be purchased at the Museum’s Main Entrance or from the Spitfire 360 Experience Ride desk located next to our MK16 Spitfire Experience.
This experience is suitable for visitors aged 13+. Children aged 13+ must obtain permission from their parents before using this experience.
