Engine – Bristol Hercules 763

Serial No: n/a
Period: WWII
Reference: 84/E/1101
Museum: Midlands
Location: Hangar 1
On Display: Yes

This sleeve-valve as its name implies has the inlet and exhaust valves in the form of a sleeve working between the piston and cylinder wall and driven by eccentrics from the other gears. This sleeve replaces the more conventional poppet valves of other engines. This 2300hp engine shows just how far the radial engine has developed when compared to the 50hp Anzani. Hercules Engines were fitted to the Bristol Beaufighter, HP Halifax, HP Hastings, Short Stirling, Vickers Wellington, Avro Lancaster and many others. The engine in our collection is from a Handley Page Hermes.
