With a growing demand for car ownership in the Eastern Bloc, the Trabant evolved from earlier designs as a car for the people. Steel was in short supply so
“Duraplast” composite material was used for the body. Production never managed to meet the demand. Despite this, over three million were built, some of which were exported.
