The traditionally built wood-and-fabric Slingsby Cadet was an excellent glider, produced in large numbers for Air Training Corps use. 131 of the TX Mk 3 variant were produced, as a two-seat tandem trainer to support a shift in glider training policy away from single-seat basic training.

The type served until 1985, when many were auctioned off into private hands. With the instructor in the rear seat, the cadet under training flew in the front seat, where it was easier to master circuit training in preparation for that all-important first solo circuit of the airfield.
